Rough surf led to more than 500 ocean rescues on Los Angeles County beaches over the weekend, and the swells were expected to continue Monday and into next week, officials said.
More challenging conditions are expected in the coming days as a south-by-southwest swell gains momentum, according to the county fire department’s lifeguard division.
Waves are forecast to reach head-high at south-facing beaches, and lifeguards were warning swimmers about rip currents that can pull them away from shore despite efforts to swim back.
“Please make it a point to know your abilities and check in with a lifeguard before entering the water to stay aware of all hazards,” officials said.
