A 46-year-old man wounded in a Compton shooting last week who died at a hospital was publicly identified Monday.

He was Aaron Hammer, according to the Medical Examiner’s office. He was shot at around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27 in the 13000 block of South Long Beach Boulevard, between Alondra and Greenleaf boulevards.

That evening, deputies spotted a vehicle with three suspects inside on the westbound Artesia (91) Freeway and began a pursuit, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The suspects exited the freeway at Central Avenue in Compton, then drove to 139th Street and Parmlee Avenue, where they bailed out of their vehicle, sheriff’s Deputy Tracy Koerner told City News Service.

During the pursuit, the suspects shot at the deputies several times, a department spokeswoman confirmed.

No deputies were injured during the shooting. But a patrol vehicle was struck by gunfire during the pursuit.

After exiting the vehicle, its occupants ran into the surrounding neighborhood. Deputies established a perimeter in the 14100 block of South Zamora Avenue, near Central and Rosecrans avenues in a small unincorporated area bordering Compton.

The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau responded and took the three suspects into custody around 5:50 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Investigators recovered three assault rifles from the suspects’ vehicle.

Their booking information, including their names, ages and genders, were not immediately available.

Anyone with additional information regarding the incident was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
