The Alex Theatre in Glendale announced Tuesday it has extended its 70mm presentation of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” through Aug. 20 following strong audience demand.
The theater said the extension follows a successful opening run that made the Glendale venue the nation’s top-grossing theater for 70mm presentations of the film.
The engagement began July 17 following a cinema system upgrade that included the installation of 70mm film projectors. According to theater officials, it marked the Alex’s return to first-run studio films after more than 35 years.
The theater said moviegoers traveled from across Southern California and beyond to see the film in the large-format presentation, contributing to the extended run.
“We’re incredibly grateful to the people of Los Angeles and to film lovers from across Southern California for making our presentation of `The Odyssey’ in 70mm such an extraordinary success,” Alex Theatre Artistic Director Miles Williams said in a statement. “The response from audiences has been overwhelming and a wonderful reminder of how much people still value the shared experience of seeing a great film together.”
The Alex Theatre, which opened in 1925, has hosted first-run films, live performances and special events for generations.
Theater officials said the addition of 70mm film projection is part of an effort to expand its role as a destination for major cinema presentations.
