A fire in a residence in Santa Ana left two men hospitalized with burns and a girl and her grandmother hospitalized because of smoke inhalation, authorities said.
The fire in the 3800 block of South Timber Street was reported around 8 p.m. Tuesday and knocked down by 40 firefighters in 30 minutes, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said.
The fire started when a 23-year-old male resident of the home, and a 35- year-old friend were working in the garage on a pickup truck and set off a spark that ignited gasoline, Concialdi said.
The fire spread from the pickup to the rest of the garage and then an adjoining attic, Concialdi said.
The 23-year-old man climbed into the attic in an unsuccessful attempt to extinguish the fire with a garden hose, and suffered burns to his arms, Concialdi said.
The fire caused an estimated $75,000 damage to the structure and its contents, Concialdi said.
Eight adults, six children and two dogs were living at the residence, Concialdi said.
