A 50-year-old Irvine man was sentenced Monday to 15 months in federal prison for selling stolen hospital supplies online and making more than $1.8 million in profit.

Bahram Khandan pleaded guilty Feb. 20 to misbranding of a drug with intent to defraud and interstate transportation of stolen property.

U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney said that after Khandan is released from prison, he will have to spend nine months under home detention.

Khandan’s Irvine company received prescription drugs, biological products and medical supplies from his sister, who stole the goods from hospitals where she worked, including UC Irvine Medical Center in Irvine, Kaiser Permanente’s Riverside Medical Center and the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, according to federal prosecutors.

Khandan sold the medicine and other stolen goods on eBay and Alibaba.com, according to prosecutors. His profit was $1,883,390, and Carney has scheduled a Nov. 10 hearing to determine what restitution the defendant owes the hospitals.

Khandan’s sister, Goli Alai-Khandan, was sentenced to a year in state prison in a case filed by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office for thefts from Kaiser Permanente. In that case, Khandan was also prosecuted for thefts from Kaiser’s Riverside hospital and was sentenced to six months in state prison.
