Three Orange County schools were among 337 across the country honored Tuesday as National Blue Ribbon Schools this year.
Huntington Seacliff Elementary School in Huntington Beach, William T. Newland Elementary School in Huntington Beach and Rossmoor Elementary School in Los Alamitos joined the 24 California schools winning the honor from the U.S. Department of Education.
The award is based on overall academic excellence or in how much a school’s poorer or otherwise disadvantaged students showed significant academic improvement.
“These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American education — that all students, no matter their name or zip code, can flourish when schools provide safe, creative, and challenging learning environments,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan said. “National Blue Ribbon Schools are models of consistent exellence and a resource for other schools and districts. We celebrate them for their tireless effort and boundless creativity in reaching and teaching every student.”
The three Orange County schools won the honor for how well they served disadvantaged students.
A ceremony recognizing the Blue Ribbon schools will be held Nov. 10-11 in Washington. D.C.
