Gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI charges were filed Tuesday against a man accused of causing a weekend crash in Anaheim that killed a young boy and seriously injured four of his relatives.
Gary Stephen Hunt, 41, was scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon on the vehicular manslaughter charge and one count of driving under the influence of a drug causing injury, both felonies.
The three-vehicle crash happened just before midnight Saturday. A Toyota Camry carrying a family of five, including 10-year-old Rafael Ramirez of Anaheim, was stopped on Euclid Street at La Palma Avenue for a red light when it was rear-ended by a full-size Toyota Tundra pickup truck driven by Hunt, Anaheim police Lt. Bob Dunn said.
The initial crash led to a collision with a third vehicle, a Honda Civic, he said.
The boy was taken to Anaheim Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:47 a.m. Sunday, according to the Orange County Coroner’s Office.
His four relatives were hospitalized with serious injuries, but they were expected to survive, Dunn said, adding that a man and woman in the Honda were treated for minor injuries.
