A woman was killed as she tried to cross a busy intersection in Santa Ana and the suspected hit-and-run driver was being held in custody Thursday, authorities said.
It happened near the intersection of West MacArthur Boulevard and South Bristol Street about 10:10 p.m. Wednesday, Santa Ana police Sgt. Matt Hermans said.
The victim — pronounced dead at the scene — was crossing the road from south to north away from a crosswalk when the vehicle struck her, police said.
Witnesses reported the 2002 Nissan Xterra that hit her was speeding, police said.
Dallas Frank Reichstein, 45, of Santa Ana, was arrested moments after the collision in a residential neighborhood, police said.
He displayed signs of intoxication and was booked on suspicion of felony hit and run and second-degree murder because he has a prior conviction for driving under the influence, police said.
