A 19-year-old man suspected of stealing items from a vehicle inside the garage of an Irvine home was arrested as he fled the residence Sunday and investigators said they found him in possession of items from three other auto burglaries in the city.

Officers responded just before 3 a.m. to a report of a burglary in progress on Winterfield Road and upon arrival spotted the suspect, later identified as Matthew Kozlov, of Anaheim Hills, leaving the area and running through neighboring properties, said Irvine police Cmdr. Julia Engen.

He was found in a nearby back yard and arrested without further incident, she said.

“Officers believe Kozlov ransacked and stole items from a vehicle parked inside the victim’s garage. They also believe he gained entry to the garage by using a garage door opener stolen from the victim’s second car parked in the driveway of the location,” Engen said.

At the time of Kozlov’s arrest, officers recovered property stolen from at least three other vehicles in the same area, she said.

“In each case, the stolen property was removed from unlocked vehicles,” Engen said.

Kozlov was booked at the Orange County Jail on suspicion of residential burglary, possession of stolen property, petty theft and resisting/obstructing officers, she said.

His bail was set at $50,000, Engen said.
