A 2-year-old girl injured in a three-vehicle hit-and-run collision in Irvine that also killed her grandmother died at a hospital Sunday, according to Irvine police.
The girl — identified by the coroner’s office as Kaydence Hampton of Lake Forest — was pronounced dead about 2:20 p.m., said Farrah Emami of the Irvine Police Department.
Her 7-year-old brother and 28-year-old mother remain hospitalized in stable condition with injuries suffered in the crash about 9 p.m. Wednesday on Alton Parkway at Barranca Parkway, Emami said.
Pronounced dead at the scene of the crash was 54-year-old Lake Forest resident Katherine Hampton, who was driving a white Chevrolet Cruze, Emami said.
Alec Scott Abraham, 20, of Costa Mesa, the motorist accused of fleeing the scene, was located in a Costa Mesa park about 1 p.m. Thursday and arrested, police said.
Abraham, who was booked on suspicion of gross vehicle manslaughter and felony hit and run, is in custody with bail set at $1 million and was expected to be formally charged and arraigned on Monday, Emami said.
Based on witness statements, police are investigating the possibility that street racing was involved in the crash, Emami said.
Abraham, who was driving a black Ford Mustang, ran from the scene and was the subject of a search involving bloodhounds and helicopter crews, police said.
A 44-year-old woman driving a black Honda Civic that was also involved in the crash was taken to a hospital and has since been released, Emami said.
“One additional vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed was observed at the scene and is described as a dark-colored, lowered coupe of sedan, possibly a Mustang,” Emami said. The car was last seen headed west on Alton Parkway away from the crash scene, she said.
Anyone with information regarding the possible street racing or the second vehicle and its driver or other possible occupants was urged to call Irvine police Detective Jonathan Cherney at (949) 724-7024.
