An explosion at a business in Huntington Beach Wednesday left a woman badly burned, authorities said.

Emergency crews were sent to Huntington Beach Propane, 18961 Gothard St., about 5:30 a.m., said Huntington Beach Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Lopez.

The cause of the blast was under investigation, Lopez said.

“Surprisingly, it does not appear to be related to the actual propane operation,” he said. “The business not only sells propane but also offers personal storage using approximately 100 (storage containers) on site, and the explosion (involved) one of those containers.”

After the explosion, two Huntington Beach Police officers pulled the victim from the rubble, Lopez said. The unidentified woman was taken to a trauma center.

The blast also damaged two nearby vehicles, a block wall, and two other storage containers, along with a window at an adjacent business.

“The involved container is still intact, but is significantly deformed from the force of the explosion,” Lopez said.

The explosion was under investigation by the Orange County sheriff’s bomb squad and the Huntington Beach police and fire departments.
