Mazda announced Monday the automaker’s North American headquarters will remain in Irvine, but employees will work elsewhere in the city.
Mazda’s North American headquarters will be moving next month to a new facility at 200 Spectrum Center Drive. The company signed a 10-year lease, continuing its three-decade residency in Irvine since relocating from Compton, where Mazda established its first North American headquarters in 1970.
“It is one thing to build outstanding vehicles, but the people who work for Mazda must also feel that their workspace is as good as the cars we build,” said Masahiro Moro, president and CEO of the carmaker’s North American arm. “Continued improvement of the work environment will lead to a better experience for our customers, and that is our ultimate goal.”
The company will have offices on five of the 21 floors of the building, the tallest in Orange County. The Mazda offices will occupy 102,000 square feet and the company will have its name on the structure.
Mazda’s vehicles will be on display in the 426,000-square-foot building, which was designed by architect Pei Cobb Freed Partners for the Irvine Co.
The building is said to have unobscured 360-degree views, with 10-foot, floor-to-ceiling glass that allows for more natural light.
Mazda moved to its current offices at 7755 Irvine Center Drive in October 1987. It was the first high-rise in the city at the time.
