A large tree branch fell on several elderly croquet players at Shiffer Park in Costa Mesa Monday morning, but no one was seriously injured, a fire captain said.

Firefighters were called to the park at 9:40 a.m. A large ficus tree, which was splitting, shed a 50-foot-long branch about 18 inches in diameter that fell on four seniors ranging in age from 75 to 99, according to Capt. Chris Coates.

The seniors meet at the park off of Bear Street, across from South Coast Plaza, twice a week to play croquet, he said.

Two women and one man were taken to an area hospital to be evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries, Coates said. The fourth victim declined transport to a hospital, he said.
