A pedestrian found dead on a Santa Ana sidewalk was killed in a hit-and-run crash, police said Friday.

The crash occurred at 11:08 p.m. Thursday in the 1100 block of West 17th Street, said Santa Ana police Cmdr. Michael Claborn.

Officers received an anonymous call regarding the pedestrian and found the man, in his early 50s, dead on the sidewalk with debris in the roadway, police said. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

“From physical evidence left at the scene, it appears the pedestrian was … in the roadway of the eastbound lanes of 17th Street walking in an unknown direction,” a police statement said. “A vehicle headed eastbound on 17th Street struck the pedestrian.”

The vehicle was possibly white and may have front-end damage. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police at (714) 245-8208.
