A short pursuit of a hit-and-run suspect led to an afternoon rush-hour standoff Monday that snarled traffic near the Santa Ana Auto Mall before the motorist was taken into custody.
The pursuit started late Monday afternoon when the motorist in a blue Corvette was involved in a hit-and-run crash, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
The chase ended a short time later when the female motorist crashed into at least one car near the Santa Ana Auto Mall. The Corvette, with extensive damage on the passenger side, came to a stop on Edinger Avenue, which was closed in both directions as California Highway Patrol officers positioned themselves behind the car with guns drawn.
The standoff continued for about an hour, with police working to determine if the driver was unconscious or simply refusing to come out.
The suspect emerged from the vehicle around 5:30 p.m. and was taken into custody, although paramedics were called to the scene to check her for injuries.
