A deployed Navy destroyer experiencing an outbreak of the novel coronavirus will make a stop in San Diego, it was reported Tuesday.
The guided-missile destroyer USS Kidd was conducting counter-drug operations off the Pacific coast of South America last week when sailors began exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
As of Monday, 47 sailors have tested positive for the virus, according to the newspaper. Two sailors have been flown ashore to the United States and another 15 were moved to the San Diego-based amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island.
A Defense Department official told the Union-Tribune that plans are still being finalized regarding what will be done once the Kidd arrives in San Diego.
The vessel’s home port is Everett, Wash. and it has a crew of more than 300.
