A 52-year-old motorist who was killed in a rollover crash on the Moreno Valley (60) Freeway apparently lost control of his vehicle and went off of the road before overturning in lanes, authorities said Friday.
The fatality occurred about 11 p.m. Thursday on the westbound 60 at Nason Street in Moreno Valley, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Sgt. Charles Murray told City News Service that the victim, identified only as a Moreno Valley resident, was driving his 2004 Toyota Camry Solara in the carpool lane at an undetermined speed when he veered to the right across lanes and “traveled up an ascending embankment.”
“The vehicle then overturned in traffic lanes, but the driver was not ejected,” Murray said.
He said that the victim’s airbag deployed, but the impact of the crash caused major traumatic injuries.
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced the motorist dead at the scene.
No other vehicles were involved.
Murray said two westbound lanes were shut down for nearly three hours while a preliminary investigation was conducted and the wreckage was cleared.
He said that an autopsy will determine whether drugs or alcohol might have been factors in the crash.
