An investigation was underway Tuesday into the death of a 21-year-old off-road enthusiast who was killed when his dirt bike struck a boulder in Aguanga.

Jose Medina of Anza was fatally injured about 2:30 p.m. Saturday on Diaz Way, near Jojoba Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said that Medina was riding his dirt bike in an unknown direction when he apparently lost control and slammed into the big rock.

Witnesses came to his aid and administered CPR until Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived and took over the resuscitative effort.

Medina was transported to Temecula Valley Hospital, but he was pronounced dead before being taken from the ambulance into the emergency room, according to the coroner’s office.

CHP investigators are awaiting autopsy results. It was not immediately known whether alcohol or drugs may have been factors in the crash.
