A 45-year-old man was fatally struck by a semi Thursday when he walked onto the Riverside (91) Freeway on the west end of Riverside.
Patrick Glant of Riverside was fatally injured just after midnight on the westbound 91 at La Sierra Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The agency said that Glant was in lanes when the big rig ran over him. There was no immediate explanation for why the victim wandered onto the freeway.
The trucker stopped on the right shoulder, as did multiple witnesses in other vehicles, the CHP said.
Officers shut down all westbound lanes for Riverside Fire Department personnel, who pronounced Glant dead at the scene.
The closure remained in effect until almost 3 a.m. while officers conducted a preliminary investigation, along with a coroner’s deputy.
The trucker was questioned but not arrested.
The fatality remains under investigation.
