A tractor-trailer overturned Friday on Interstate 10 in Chiriaco Summit, injuring one of the two occupants and snarling traffic.
The crash happened about 2:45 p.m. on westbound I-10, just east of Box Canyon Road, roughly halfway between Coachella and Desert Center, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The agency said that the driver apparently lost control, and the fully loaded big rig went onto its side in the center divider.
There were no immediate reports of other vehicles involved.
Winds were blowing 20 to 30 mph in the area at the time, but it was unknown if weather was a factor in the crash.
Two people were in the cab of the truck — one of whom was a trainee driver, who suffered cuts to his head and one of his arms, the CHP said. Riverside County Fire Department paramedics were treating him.
The other occupant was not hurt.
The eastbound fast lane was shut down as a safety precaution because of the truck’s position, slowing traffic on the busy artery, according to reports from the scene.
Shortly after 3 p.m., CHP officers requested a super duty tow truck to right the rig and remove it from the location.
There was no word on the type of cargo or extent of damage to it.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.
