A Palm Springs AIDS Memorial project is moving forward Friday after the City Council unanimously approved the design and funding for its installation.
All four council members at Thursday’s meeting voted in favor of the project, allocating $65,000 for its installation, which increased the city’s total contribution to $125,000
The memorial, donated to the city by the Palm Springs AIDS Memorial Task Force, was designed by Phillip K. Smith III beginning in 2020, with its conceptual roots tracing back over a decade.
After the City Council approved a prior design in 2021, community feedback contributed to a redesign process earlier this year.
Installation is planned for Downtown Park.
“We are thrilled that the Palm Springs City Council acted on the recommendation of the Public Arts Commission and approved the Memorial,” Task Force spokesperson Dan Spencer said in a statement. “Many visitors and residents of this city will now have an opportunity to appreciate the significance of the AIDS crisis and its tremendous impact on our community.”
