A tractor-trailer overturned Thursday at the 60/91/215 interchange near downtown Riverside, forcing closure of a connector bridge while the rig was recovered and the heavily damaged guardrail was repaired.
The crash happened about 6:25 a.m. on the eastbound Riverside (91) Freeway transition to southbound Interstate 215, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The agency said the semi went out of control and tipped over while turning onto the transition ramp, knocking out the guardrail and leaving part of the truck “dangling” over the side.
No other vehicles were involved.
The trucker suffered minor injuries and was assessed at the scene by Riverside Fire Department crews, who arrived moments later. He did not require hospitalization.
The transition was impassable as a result of the crash, and CHP officers shut it down. A SigAlert was issued just after 7 a.m. because of the blockage. As of noon, it remained in effect.
The big rig was not loaded with cargo. A salvage unit was summoned and uprighted and removed the truck two hours later.
Due to the extensive guardrail damage, a Caltrans contractor was called in to make repairs, which were expected to wrap up around 1 p.m., though rain in the area was threatening to delay the project, according to the CHP.
