A woman trekking along a mountain trail in the San Bernardino National Forest north of Pine Cove Wednesday suffered a leg injury that immobilized her, prompting Riverside County Fire Department crews to mount a rescue operation.
The “hiker down” call was received at 1:34 p.m. on Black Mountain Truck Trail, off of Highway 243, according to the fire department.
The agency said that multiple engine crews were sent to the location to initiate a search but immediately encountered challenges because the victim, whose identity was not disclosed, could not confirm exactly where she was on the trail.
The pathway courses through gorges and other difficult terrain between the highway to the west and Mt. San Jacinto to the east.
Firefighters requested assistance from the sheriff’s Mountain Search & Rescue Unit. It was unknown whether Cal Fire or sheriff’s helicopter crews would be enlisted for the rescue.
The victim reportedly suffered a lower leg injury while hiking. She was able to obtain cell phone reception and contact 911, officials said.
No other details were immediately available.
