The Perris City Council Tuesday will consider renaming the Cesar E. Chavez Library and removing all items recognizing Chavez in the city.
The renaming of the library, which opened in December 2024 in the downtown area, comes following the revelation last month of sexual assault allegations against the late labor leader and co-founder of the United Farm Workers union.
The council will also consider removing and replacing a statue of Chavez at the southwest corner of Perris Boulevard and San Jacinto Avenue, costing up to $460,000. A mural inside the library depicting Chavez will cost up to $15,000 to remove, while re-wrapping a utility box is expected to cost up to $900, according to the council agenda.
It was unclear what the library would be renamed.
The city council meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at 101 N. D St.
