An investigation was continuing Tuesday into the discovery of a body in Palm Springs believed to be a 70-year-old man who went missing from the Rancho Mirage area.

Daniel “Dan” Michael Mulcahey had been last seen about 2:30 p.m. Friday on Bob Hope Drive and MacMillan Way, but his vehicle was subsequently found abandoned in Desert Hot Springs, authorities said. A Silver Alert was activated the following day by the California Highway Patrol. Mulcahey was considered critically missing due to an unspecified medical issue and the fear he was traveling on foot in the high heat.

On Sunday, a body was found near Interstate 10 and North Gene Autry Trail, Palm Springs Police Department Deputy Chief Kyle Stern said in a video statement on the department’s social media pages.

An autopsy was pending Tuesday by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau to identity the deceased and determine the cause of death, but police said the body is believed to be that of Mulcahey.

Police said the case is being treated as a suspicious death until investigators determine whether foul play or criminal conduct contributed to his death.
