The U.S. women’s national soccer team is scheduled to begin it first training camp of 2016 Tuesday at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson.
The training camp will continue through Jan 21 when the team will head to San Diego to prepare for its Jan. 23 exhibition game against Ireland at Qualcomm Stadium, its final game before the 2016 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship begins on Feb. 10 in Texas.
“This camp begins the next chapter of this program,” U.S. coach Jill Ellis said. “We’ll have just over two weeks together to begin to build cohesion and integrate the younger players into our processes, and then we will regroup for Olympic qualifying.
“The leadership and experience of our returning World Cup players will give us a solid starting point on which to build, and we are looking forward to the next challenge.”
The 26-player training camp roster includes 16 members of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup championship team. Four of the seven Women’s World Cup players not attending the training camp have retired — Shannon Boxx, Lori Chalupny, Lauren Holiday and Abby Wambach. Christie Rampone and Megan Rapinoe are injured while forward Amy Rodriguez is pregnant with her second child.
