The Los Angeles Chargers claimed rookie Nick Rose on waivers from the Washington Redskins Monday to become their fourth kicker of the season after cutting Travis Coons.

Coons made seven of eight field goal attempts and five of six extra points in his three games with the Chargers.

“I thought Travis did some good things,” coach Anthony Lynn said in his usual Monday meeting with reporters. “I thought his leg strength was a little short on the kickoffs.

“When Nick became available, we wanted to take a look at him. We’re looking for a kicker we can keep around here for a few years. So right now, we’re just kind of looking and evaluating guys. It doesn’t mean Travis can’t come back if Nick doesn’t work out, but we liked the job that Nick did in Washington.”

Rose made 10 of 11 field goal attempts and 18 of 20 extra points in eight games with Washington. His final game with the team was Dec. 10  when he made one of two extra points in a 30-13 loss to the Chargers. Washington waived Rose Saturday after activating Dustin Hopkins off injured reserve.

Coons was promoted to the active roster Dec. 2 after Nick Novak was placed on injured reserve because of a back injury.

Novak kicked for seven games after replacing rookie Younghoe Koo who was cut after four games.
