A 2-year-old gelding suffered a fatal injury at Los Alamitos Race Course last weekend, state horse racing officials reported.
Tarzan in the Wagon “lugged in early, lost action/fell,” and was taken away by ambulance without finishing Saturday’s third race, according to the official race chart.
Video of the race shows the horse suddenly collapsing face first into the ground without making contact with another horse.
The California Horse Racing Board confirmed his death, which is listed as “musculoskeletal,” but no further information was immediately available.
It was just the third race for Tarzan in the Wagon, all at Los Alamitos. He was owned and trained by Felix Gonzalez and his jockey was Jesse Gonzalez.
Tarzan in the Wagon is the 10th horse to die from a racing or training injury at Los Alamitos this year, according to the CHRB.
The Cypress track had 13 horses die from racing or training injuries in 2023.
