A big rig crashed into a left shoulder barrier on a downtown freeway transition road and its trailer overturned Wednesday, dumping its load of concrete slabs and shutting down traffic in its wake.

The mishap occurred at 2:23 a.m. Wednesday on the transition from the westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway to the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The trailer from the 60,000-pound big rig was left on its side and the transition was further blocked by concrete slabs, the CHP said.

Video from the scene showed firefighters with crow bars trying to move the large slabs.

The CHP issued a Sigalert shutting down the transition road while a large enough tow truck arrived to pick up the big rig and concrete. Traffic was diverted to the eastbound Santa Monica Freeway.

The incident was labeled an injury accident but the log showed no reference to anyone being hurt.
