Super featherweights Andrew “El Chango” Cancio and Dardan Zenunaj will fight in the scheduled 10-round main event of a six-bout boxing card Friday evening at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio.
The 29-year-old Cancio (18-4-2, 14 knockouts) was born in Blythe and now lives in Ventura. He won the fringe World Boxing Association intercontinental super featherweight title with a 10th-round technical knockout of the previously undefeated Aidar Sharibayev April 12 at Fantasy Springs in his last fight.
Zenunaj (14-4, 11 KOs), a 31-year-old Albanian who lives in the Sherman Oaks section of Los Angeles, will be fighting for the first time since losing a bid for the vacant regional North American Boxing Association super featherweight championship Dec. 14.
Zenunaj’s fight with Carlos Morales was stopped in the sixth round due to a cut over Morales’ left eye caused by a head clash with Zenunaj, who was trailing 59-56 on all three scorecards.
Zenunaj had won the regional North American Boxing Organization super featherweight title in his previous bout on a third-round technical knockout of Recky Dulay, knocking Dulay down twice in the first round and once in the third.
The 10-round co-main event will match super welterweights Yoshihiro Kamegai of Japan and Greg Vendetti of Stoneham, Massachusetts.
The 35-year-old Kamegai (27-4-2, 24 KOs) will be fighting for the first time since losing a 12-round unanimous decision to Miguel Cotto Aug. 26, 2017, in a bid for the vacant World Boxing Organization super welterweight title.
The 28-year-old Vendetti (19-2-1, 12 KOs) has won 15 consecutive fights following back-to-back losses on Nov. 23, 2013, and March 17, 2014.
The card also includes two fights with boxers from Coachella.
Rommel Caballero (1-0-1) will fight Jahaziel Vasquez of Mexico (2-7, 1 KO) in a scheduled six-round super featherweight fight. Anthony Reyes (2-0, 2 KOs) will fight Luis Montellano of Mexico in a scheduled four-round super bantamweight fight.
ESPN2 and the Spanish-language network ESPN Deportes will begin their coverage at 8 p.m. ESPN3 will livestream the preliminary bouts beginning at 6:30 p.m.
