A series of earthquakes, the largest with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9, struck in Anza, about 22 miles south of Palm Springs this evening.

The first and largest earthquake struck at 6:53 p.m. and was followed by seven other earthquakes within 15 minutes, with magnitudes ranging from 3.7 to 2.5, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The largest earthquake caused strong and moderate shaking within Riverside County and sent light shaking into Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Bernardino counties, USGS reported.
