A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Saturday for the Avenue 66 bridge in Mecca.
The ceremony will be held at 11 a.m., with parking available at the Mecca Boys and Girls Club, 91-391 Avenue 66. The event will feature a performance by Mariachi Nuevo Amanecer, a display of vehicles by local agencies, light refreshments and the ribbon cutting ceremony, according to the Office of Supervisor Manuel Perez.
Construction on the $60 million project began in the summer of 2020, connecting the Mecca community near Interstate 86 to the downtown area.
The 800-foot-long bridge goes over Highway 111, the Union Pacific Railroad and Hammond Road to provide an easier and safer form of transportation for vehicles and pedestrians alike without needing to cross train tracks.
“The Avenue 66 bridge will provide an improved transportation connection for the Mecca community, which helps the quality of life of residents as well as the local economy,” Perez said in a statement.
“From residents commuting to work, to parents taking their kids to school, to first responders in emergency vehicles, everyone benefits from the smoother travel option this project creates.”
