Health officials will conduct anti-mosquito spraying in Monterey Park and West Puente Valley this week, it was announced Tuesday.

The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District will be conduct the treatments via truck on Wednesday and Thursday between midnight and 5 a.m., in an effort to reduce the number of mosquitoes in the area that create a significant public health risk.

The district will use “ultra-low volume applications to target adult mosquito populations and lower the risk of mosquito-borne disease transmission to the community,” officials said.

If weather conditions are not favorable, or if there are operational delays, the application may be postponed or delayed.

The Monterey Park treatment will occur in the area between West Floral Drive and the Pomona (60) Freeway, east of Vancouver Avenue and west of Collegian Avenue.

The West Puente Valley treatment will occur in the area between Sunset Avenue and North Hacienda Boulevard, north of Amar Road and south of West Francisquito Avenue.

SGV Mosquito specialists will be applying Aquaduet, which contains Sumithrin and Prallethrin, active ingredients formulated to mimic the properties in chrysanthemum flowers. Since the material is suspended in water, the application will not harm the finishes on cars or homes, officials said.

An effort will be made to notify residents in the treatment areas through physical postings, social media, Nextdoor and traditional news media. Residents are also urged to take an active role in reducing the threat of mosquito-borne diseases to themselves and in their neighborhoods by following the tips below:

— Eliminate standing water in clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, discarded tires, buckets, watering troughs, or anything that holds water for more than a week.

— Ensure that swimming pools, spas, and ponds are properly maintained.

— Change the water in pet dishes, birdbaths, and other small containers weekly.

— Report neglected swimming pools in your neighborhood to your vector control district.

The following tips can be used to prevent mosquito bites:

— Apply mosquito repellent to exposed skin before going outdoors and reapply as recommended on the label.

— Wear insect repellent containing CDC and EPA approved active ingredients: DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
