Mayor Eric Garcetti is scheduled to be joined by Pope Francis, Chinese President Xi Jinping, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in speaking at the virtual Climate Ambition Summit Saturday.
Garcetti will speak in his role as Chair of C40 Cities, which bills itself as a network of the world’s megacities committed to addressing climate change. The speech is expected to last about 90 seconds, according to sources with knowledge of Garcetti’s schedule.
Other Americans set to speak include Apple CEO Tim Cook, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker.
The summit coincides with the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement, a global pact aimed at averting catastrophic climate change. The United States formally exited the Paris Agreement last month at the behest of President Donald Trump.
The daylong summit is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. California time, with Garcetti listed in roughly the middle of the list of presentations. The summit will be streamed online at climateambitionsummit2020.org.
