The Los Angeles Police Department was conducting a DUI Saturation Patrol in Van Nuys Sunday evening to take impaired drivers off the road.

The specific location of the checkpoint was not announced, but was expected to be conducted until 11 p.m. Sunday.

DUI checkpoint locations were determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes and arrests. The department stated that the primary purpose was to promote public safety by educating drivers on the perils of DUI and to remove inebriated drivers from the roadways.

The Los Angeles Police Department reminded the public that impaired driving results not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While marijuana is legal, driving under the influence of it is not.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
