A man fatally injured when his vehicle struck a stopped California Highway Patrol car was a 33-year-old Lancaster resident, the coroner’s office reported Friday.

The crash, reported shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday, happened at 50th Street East and Avenue P in Palmdale, CHP Officer Gil Hernandez said. The fatal victim, Robert Nemila, died later at a hospital, according to the coroner’s office.

A CHP officer, who had pulled over the driver of a 2005 Toyota Camry on southbound 50th Street East, was outside his patrol car writing a ticket when he heard “screeching tires” and saw a 2004 Ford Taurus, driven by Nemila, heading south toward the rear of his stopped vehicle, Hernandez said.

The Taurus hit the rear of the patrol car, pushing it forward toward the officer, who tried to jump out of the way but was struck and suffered minor injuries, Hernandez said. The patrol car was pushed into the Camry, slightly injuring the driver, Hernandez said.
