A tour bus that overturned in a crash in Shasta County on Sunday, killing a 33-year-old man and injuring at least 31 other people, was en route to Pasco, Wash. from Los Angeles with a 67-year-old Los Angeles man at the wheel, according to a report from the scene.
The crash happened about 7:30 a.m. just off Interstate 5 in Pollard Flat, according to the Redding Record Searchlight.
Thirty-one people were taken to hospitals and one left the scene, the newspaper reported, citing the California Highway Patrol.
Two of the victims were in critical condition, according to The Record Searchlight.
The bus, which was operated by Othello, Wash.-based Yellow Arrow Lines LLC, was also involved in a minor crash into a Denny’s in Red Bluff earlier Sunday, the newspaper reported.
The name of the deceased victim, who is from Parlier, Calif., has not been released pending next of kin notification. The driver was identified as Jose Victor Garcilazo Palencia, according to The Record Searchlight.
Driver fatigue was being investigated as a likely cause of the crash, the newspaper reported.
Pollard Flat is about 575 miles north of Los Angeles, on a mountainous section of Interstate 5, not far from the Oregon line.
