A man was killed when he stepped off a Canoga Park curb with his skateboard in front of a car that had the right of way, a police sergeant said Monday.

It happened at 9:34 p.m. Sunday at Strathern Street and Canoga Avenue, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Bill Kelly said.

The man, said to be in his 20s to 30s, stepped off the sidewalk and put the skateboard down and moved into the path of a gray BMW 330i while the driver still had the green light, according to Kelly.

“Multiple witnesses put the pedestrian at fault,” Kelly said. “He probably thought the light would turn before it did and started prematurely.”

The skateboarder was pronounced dead at the scene, Kelly said.

The BMW driver stopped and remained at the scene, had a license and was not driving under the influence, Kelly said.
