Two shootings early Monday in the unincorporated Lennox area of the county left a man dead and another man and a woman wounded.

In the first crime, a man was shot twice by an assailant who got out of a car and opened fire in the 5000 block of 111th Street at 12:15 a.m., said Lt. John Burcher of the sheriff’s South Los Angeles Station.

The man was walking on 111th Street when a 1990 to 2000 Mercury Marquis with three males inside pulled up next to him, Burcher said. One got out and shot the man in the lower back and buttocks, then got back in the car and took off, the lieutenant said.

The victim, whose name was withheld, was taken to a hospital, but a condition report was unavailable.

In the second crime, a man and a woman, both transients, were shot at 111th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard about 3:10 a.m., the sheriff’s department reported.

The 37-year-old man died at the scene, and the 32-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The man’s name was withheld pending notification of his relatives, and the woman’s name was withheld.

According to the preliminary investigation, two suspects approached the victims on foot, and one or both suspects opened fire and fled, the sheriff’s department reported.

Anyone with information about either crime was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau, (323) 890-5500; or Crime Stoppers, (800) 222-TIPS.
