A Los Angeles Police Department officer shot in the shoulder and another officer injured during a Boyle Heights shootout that killed a suspected gang member remained hospitalized Saturday, authorities said.
The officers were “in good condition and good spirits,” said LAPD Officer Drake Madison. “They are in the hospital for observation.”
The officer-involved shooting occurred about 8:30 p.m. Friday in the 3400 block of Lee Street, near the intersection of 7th and Lorena streets, according to LAPD Officer Rosario Herrera.
The name of the alleged gang member was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The officers were conducting gang suppression activities in the area when the suspect fired on them. “Unfortunately that sent bullets flying in both directions,” Madison said.
What led to the shooting was part of the investigation being conducted by the LAPD’s Use of Force Division, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Justice System Investigation Division Shooting Team and the Los Angeles Police Commission’s Inspector General’s Office, he said.
