Three county firefighters were hospitalized Sunday for exposure to carbon monoxide gas at an apartment building with a natural gas problem.

Firefighters were dispatched at 12:42 a.m. to the Tuscany Hills Apartments in the 21000 block of Box Springs Road on a report of a carbon monoxide alarm going off in one of the apartments.

“Firefighters arrived on scene and noticed a slight odor of gas within the apartment. They requested the Southern California Gas Company, one ambulance and a hazardous materials response to the incident,” said April Newman of the Riverside County Fire Department.

Three firefighters from the first-arriving crew were hospitalized, and their medical condition was not immediately disclosed.

The person inside the unit evacuated when the carbon monoxide alarm went off and later declined medical help, and the hazard was declared over after two hours.
