A female pedestrian was struck and killed by a motorist turning into a shopping center parking lot in Homeland, authorities said Thursday.

The victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was fatally injured about 10 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of state Route 74 and Juniper Flats Road, a couple miles west of Hemet, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Mike Lassig said the woman was walking in the westbound lane of the highway in dark-colored clothing at the time.

Joseph Petorella, 52, of Homeland was going eastbound on the 74 in his 2008 Chevrolet Silverado and allegedly initiated a left turn to go into the shopping center parking lot when he hit the victim, whom he apparently didn’t see, according to Lassig.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived a few minutes later and pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Petorella was not hurt.

The CHP investigation remains active.
