La Verne police have shut down through traffic on Baseline Road between Fruit Street and Japonica.
Los Angeles County fire was conducting voluntary evacuations from the county area, east of La Verne, police said.
Firefighters are attacking the flames with both ground crews and at least one water-dropping helicopter.
Some homes were threatened by the fire, Singleton said.
