A woman was killed Monday when the car she was driving collided with a big rig on the eastbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Monterey Park, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 1:19 a.m. at the connector to the Long Beach (710) Freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.

The 29-year-old Whittier woman died at the scene, the CHP reported. Her name was withheld, pending notification of her relatives.

According to the preliminary investigation the woman was driving a Mazda 6 when, “for reasons still under investigation, the Mazda traveled right directly toward the left side of the tractor-trailer as it was passing it.”

The Mazda then overturned, ending up on its roof, the CHP reported. The trucker was not injured. A witness told the CHP the car was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash.

The CHP issued a SigAlert at 1:28 a.m. for lanes 2, 3 and 4 of the eastbound San Bernardino Freeway. The lanes were reopened at 5:12 a.m.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the CHP’s East Los Angeles Area office at (323) 980-4600.
