Investigators will try Thursday to determine the cause of a fire that consumed one vehicle, more than 30 large pallets of cardboard and cargo containers and knocked out power to at least 400 customers in Coachella.

The fire erupted at 3:47 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Oates Lane and Avenue 50 and damaged power lines, said April Newman with Riverside County Fire.

At least 400 Imperial Irrigation District customers were knocked offline, but power has since been restored, according to the utility’s web site.

It took firefighters five hours to contain the blaze and they were able to stop it from destroying a building, Newman said.

Damage was estimated at $250,000.
