Newport Beach police Wednesday asked for the public’s help in tracking down a knife-wielding assailant who stabbed a man, and also hope to track down a witness to the attack.

The victim, a 28-year-old Dana Point resident whose name was withheld, was stabbed following the closure of a bar about 1 a.m. Sunday near Newport Boulevard and 28th Street, said Newport Beach police Lt. Tom Fischbacher.

The victim, who was stabbed several times, was hospitalized, but was expected to survive, Fischbacher said.

Police are looking for a white man in his mid-20s who witnessed the attack. Detectives released a surveillance camera photo of the witness, who has brown hair and green or blue eyes, is about 6 feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds. He was wearing white shirts and a burgundy and white shirt with flip-flops.

The suspect is a Latino man in his mid-20s who has “scraggly” hair and is about 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9, according to police.

Anyone with relevant information was asked to call Detective Rick Henry at (949) 644-3797. Police welcome anonymous tips through a recorded hotline at (800) 500-NBPD.
