An ex-con who allegedly attacked San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies attempting to detain him in Moreno Valley, prompting one of them to open fire on him, must stand trial on charges of assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest, a judge ruled Monday.
Following a preliminary hearing at the Riverside Hall of Justice, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Charles Koosed found there was sufficient evidence to hold Raymond Edwin Vaughan, 34, to answer to the felony counts, as well as sentence-enhancing allegations of committing serious offenses within five years of parole from state prison.
Koosed scheduled a post-preliminary hearing arraignment for Dec. 10 and left Vaughan’s bail set at $500,000. The San Bernardino resident is being held at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside.
According to sheriff’s officials, about 3 p.m. on Sept. 22, 2017, San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies went to the 26000 block of Scott Victor Circle, near Coronada Drive, to arrest Vaughan on a felony warrant related to alleged weapons violations.
Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Willison said that during the encounter, the 6-foot-3-inch, 200-pound Vaughan allegedly turned hostile and fought with the lawmen, one of whom opened fire in response, not hitting the defendant.
Vaughan was able to escape during the scuffle, slipping out of the area despite a law enforcement dragnet that lasted well into the night.
Investigators from both Riverside and San Bernardino counties joined forces to find the convicted felon, who was apprehended the next day in the 2000 block of Ostrems Way in San Bernardino.
Because the confrontation occurred in Moreno Valley, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office had jurisdiction and filed charges.
According to San Bernardino County Superior Court records, Vaughan has several prior convictions for burglary.
