One person riding an electric scooter was struck by a vehicle in the Fairfax area of Los Angeles and later died at a hospital and the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody, authorities said Friday morning.

The deadly accident occurred on Melrose Avenue near Martel Avenue about 11 p.m. as a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into another vehicle making a turn and that crash sent the first vehicle careening into the person on the scooter, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The victim was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, police said.

The driver was taken into custody. It was unclear if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

The age, gender and name of the victim were not disclosed.
