A 61-year-old man often seen riding a tricycle adorned with an American flag and a sign praising Jesus was killed Monday in a traffic crash in Whittier.
Paramedics sent to Whittier Boulevard and Pounds Avenue shortly after 6 a.m. pronounced the man dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
He was identified in a Whittier Daily News story and on a gofundme page as “Tricycle Man” Danny Martin.
A section of Whittier Boulevard was closed in the area while an investigation was conducted. Information was not immediately available on the identity of the victim.
Martin had ridden his trike in Whittier’s annual Christmas parade on Saturday, according to The Whittier Daily News, which reported that Martin, a former motocross racer, had been partially paralyzed in a motorcycle crash while riding in sand dunes near Bakersfield in 1981.
As of Monday evening, $4,586 had been raised, toward a goal of $25,000 to help pay for Martin’s funeral expenses.
