Downey police said Monday that St. Patrick’s Day patrols would be increased Tuesday even though bars will be closed throughout the region.

The extra vigilance is to continue through the month of March on weekends, according to a Downey police statement.

Patrols will focus on drunken driving.

Officers will also be looking for drivers impaired by marijuana, as well as by prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Drivers charged with driving under the influence will face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license and possible jail time, police said.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom Sunday ordered bars to remain closed and for restaurants to sharply reduce the number of customers.

The City of Downey has postponed all of its public events through the end of March.
